Event Rules

Event Rules for Runners
Every organized event must have some rules to help make it fair and fun for all participants.

1) Any runner who does not traverse the entire course, for any reason, is disqualified. Deliberate violation is cause for a life-time ban from the IAT 50.
2) Your Race Number must be worn on the front of your clothing.
3) Runners must clearly display their number at each aid station so that it can be recorded.
4) Runners must yield to vehicles at road crossings, and obey commands from race officials (orange vests). Radio, CD or cassette powered headphones are prohibited while participating in the race.
5) Any runner dropping out shall do so at an aid station and inform a race official. Transportation to the finish area will be provided upon request. Quitting the course without telling a race official creates big problems, including a ban from future IAT 50s. Do not become a "lost runner".
6) Runners will accept the directions and decisions of aid station captains and medical personnel.
7) NO LITTERING ON THE TRAIL. Please pay special attention to proper disposal of gel packets and foil wrappers.
8) Crews may assist only at designated crew access sites. NO PACING!! Violation can lead to disqualification.
9) Aid stations close at designated times. If you continue on after these times, you will be disqualified; and, on your own. Keep in mind that all aid stations are volunteers who are scheduled for set times at their aid station.

Crews, Spectators & Rules
The Race Director of any trail ultra will tell you that litter on the course and property of people living near the course is a threat to the existence of the race. Please take this seriously and see that your crew does as well. A runner may be disqualified if his or her crew causes problems.

1) Pets must be leashed, and Crews may not litter!
2) Crews may park only at designated parking areas. Where parking is allowed along the side of a road, it is only on one side of the road and totally off the pavement. Sheriffs may ticket violators. Observe no parking signs.
3) If a runner drops from the race, his crew should be sure that the aid station personnel or Race Officials are notified.
4) All road guards will wear ORANGE VESTS. Obey their instructions. YOU MUST STOP FOR TRAFFIC!
5) At registration and packet pick-up more details will be available on parking.

Course Marking
The 50 mile course will be marked with white surveyor's paint while the 50K will be marked with orange paint.

Confusion Corner
Refer to the trail map. Locate AS 3 and AS 8. Note the point where the trail moves to the southwest and to the northeast. Understanding this cross over point is critical to keep you on the race course. As you leave the Nordic Ski Trail from AS 3 you are running on horse trails for about .5 miles. Then, the horse trail bisects the Ice Age Trail to the southwest (hard, hairpin left for 50 milers out) and northeast (straight and slight right for 50Kers). Look for a yellow marker (painted rectangle on trees or rocks). This is the identifying marker for the Ice Age Trail along the entire course.

Splits
Splits will be recorded at each aid station. It is your responsibility to have your number recorded at each station. Depending on volunteer power, we are looking into keying in splits to make them available to runners.

Check Points
Check points exist where runners might go off or re-enter the course. If you get off course and re-enter at a check point, you must go back to where you left the course and continue the correct course from that point.

Aid Stations
Aid stations are stocked with the usual assortment of carbo snacks, PBJ Sandwiches, fruit, water, coke and sports drink.  For more detail on 50 mile Aid Stations, click into this Race Day link. For more detail on 50K and relay aid stations, check out this Race Day link.
